August is Ferment month at Harvest Launceston Community Farmers’ Market and this week we explore vegie ferments, how to put the bugs into vegetables for an exponential increase in their goodness.
Fermentation is a transformative process in which microorganisms (bacteria, yeast and fungi) turn sugars into food acids, carbon dioxide and alcohol. Fermentation can occur naturally or using a starting culture, it preserves food, enhances flavours and has health benefits.
Karina from FermenTas will be at the market this week to explore how to maximise your veggies.
This week at Harvest we have Thistle Hut with their cut flowers and the return of Tasmanian Wasabi Products. The weather bureau is forecasting good weather ducks this Saturday and Strelleyfield Farm will be at the market with fresh duck or for some sustainable smoked salmon visit 41° South.
The weather forecast for Saturday is a maximum of 13° with a 40% chance of showers. Harvest has loan umbrellas at their stall if you need some wet weather protection.
