Honeybees are an integral part of the Harvest Launceston Community Farmers’ Market. The bees ensure there are fruit and vegetable crops, maintain biodiversity in our native forests and contribute to local food security.
Australia has 2 000 native bee species which together with the European honey bee are critical to our food security as they pollinate most of our crops, the food we eat. Apiarists are a critical part of the food chain, managing bee hives in paddocks and forests across the country, from rooftop gardens to the remote forests of the Tasmanian wilderness.
Tristan and Rebecca Campbell from Honey Tasmania fell in love with Tasmania and bees making their home on the West Tamar. Tristan has a diverse office tending to beehives in the paddocks of local farmers to accessing some of the remote forests on the West Coast.
At West-Bee Honey Dave Gibson is the apiarist in charge of bee logistics, from managing bee colonies for pollinators of crops or collecting honey from hives deep in the forests of unique Tasmanian flora. Wendy is at Harvest each week with their diverse range of award winning produced by bees that roam across Tasmania.
This Saturday visit the Northern Beekeepers Association next to the West-Bee Honey stall to have all your bee questions answered. Build a hive in your garden and remember to wear yellow to show your support of bees. At Honey Tasmania there will be a buzz, lookout for a visiting “bee”.
