The first Harvest Launceston Community Farmers’ Market market of 2021 will deliver plenty of cherries, berries and apricots. Many of our farmers are at the peak of their season and while the rest of us take time out to enjoy the summer the farmers and farm workers are hard at work picking and packing some of the best produce Tasmanian has to offer.
Each Saturday for a few weeks in summer, our premier cherry and apricot growers make the journey from the south of the State to bring their prized fruit to the market. Penna Valley grows a variety of apricots, sunshine wrapped up as balls of fruit to delight the taste buds. Richmond Cherries, joins Pip from Jones River Co and Ferniehurst Cherries with a variety of cherries that all ripen at different stages of the season.
Closer to home, on the West Tamar All Things Cherry add to their regular weekly stall with the freshest of cherries, which throughout the year are transormed into pies, jams, cordials and vinegars.
Just outside the city, Bioberries near Breadalbane, is fast gaining a reputation for raspberries that make a Tasmanian summer meal a veritable feast. From the north, Sheffield Berry Gardens have a selection of berries including their red currants, which are delicious scattered over salads or added to a cheese board.
On the savoury side we have fresh mushrooms to enchant, add some black garlic and your are on a highway to taste bud heaven. Jordan from Hillwood Fresh Food Co, has been growing mushrooms on the East Tamar and a regular stallholder who for some years has been offering expert insights on how to perfectly prepare the different varieties. Recently, Harvest has been lucky enough to have West Tamar Fungi and Mr Brown & Towns Mushroom Garden join the market and broaden our mushroom horizons. Garlic is the perfect accompaniment and at Tasmanian Natural Garlic you can choose from fresh, smoked or the wonderful fermented black garlic that adds an umami punch to any mushroom dish.
Some of our regular weekly producers have taken this week off from the market but there will still be plenty of the freshest and finest Tassie produce at the first Harvest Launceston Community Farmers’ Market for 2021.
